  • How to get to Calvi?

You can reach Calvi by plane or by boat. I highly recommend taking the boat if you want to visit Calvi without a car.

The overnight crossing from Marseille to Île Rousse is available year-round with Corsica linea, and in the summer, a crossing from Toulon to Île Rousse is also available with Corsica ferries. The boat trip also offers stunning views upon arrival in Île Rousse, as well as beautiful sunsets and sunrises!

From L’Île Rousse to Calvi, you can then take the picturesque U Trinichellu train, which connects the two towns in 40 minutes several times a day, all year round. It’s a 5-minute walk from the ferry to the train station. Schedules are available here – tickets (€6 for the full journey) can be purchased at the station.

The journey is the perfect introduction to the beauty of Balagne, as the train follows a route through the maquis and along the coast – a route that’s impossible to follow by road!

It is also possible to fly to Calvi. Flights from Marseille, Nice, and Paris are available year-round, and many other cities in France are also connected to Calvi during the high season. From there, you’ll need to take a taxi to downtown Calvi, which is a few kilometers away.

  • Where to stay to visit Calvi?

There is a wide range of accommodations in Calvi and the surrounding area, consisting mainly of hotels and furnished rentals. I stayed at the Best Western Casa Bianca, which offers excellent value for money just a stone’s throw from the historic center.

The rooms are modern and very spacious, some with a beautiful sea view, and two pools – one indoor and one outdoor – let you relax in any season! Starting at €70 during the off-season.

  • How many days to spend in Calvi?

You can easily visit Calvi in a single day, strolling through the historic center and along its sandy beaches. But plan on spending at least three days to discover the area around Calvi and enjoy the walking and hiking trails – without even needing a car!

This makes it easy to follow a flexible visit Calvi Corsica itinerary, even without a car.

If, on the other hand, you have a car, there’s more than enough to keep you busy for a wonderful week in Calvi and the surrounding area, as the region is rich in diverse and varied gems to suit every taste.

Note that the Balagne Village Route alone is worth dedicating a full day to, between Calvi and Île Rousse.

  • What is the best month to visit Calvi, Corsica?

I highly recommend to visit Calvi during the off-season. The town is lively all year round, and you’ll have no trouble finding a restaurant or things to do, even in February – the month I had the pleasure of visiting Calvi.

The train that serves all the beaches also runs year-round. Plus, at the end of winter, the snow-capped peaks of the nearby mountains offer a stunning view between the sea and the mountains

According to the locals, the ideal time to visit Calvi is late March and April: there are still very few tourists, and the hikes are bathed in sunlight, with Corsican immortelle and lavender in bloom – a symphony of yellow and purple that is said to be a sight to behold!

Note: From April through the end of October, everything is open in the heart of the Balagne villages! Restaurants, artisan workshops, local producers… so this is the best time to visit if you want to explore not only Calvi but also its hinterland.

  • My top picks for great places to eat in Calvi

Here are a few tried-and-true recommendations in Calvi:

Via Marina: excellent cuisine and a magnificent view of Calvi Harbor

Le Nautic: fresh seafood served in a historic vaulted fishermen’s cellar right on the harbor

A Punta for delicious pizzas

Le Bar du Golfe: bistro-style cuisine on Calvi Harbor

Two other spots were also highly recommended to me during the season: Milani for their delicious ice cream and Café Colomb in the citadel for a break with a breathtaking view!

Now follow the guide to discover the best things to do in Calvi!

1. VISIT CALVI, CORSICA : THE CITADEL

The first thing that strikes you when you arrive in Calvi is, of course, its impregnable citadel, standing tall overlooking the Mediterranean Sea! So that’s what I invite you to explore first among the must-see attractions in Calvi!

Built on a massive granite rock that bears a striking resemblance to a bald head (and which is said to have given the city its name – calvitie means baldness in French 😉), it still stands today as a testament to the city’s five centuries of Genoese occupation. It is undoubtedly one of the most imposing citadels I’ve ever seen in France, and unlike most others, it isn’t attributed to Vauban!

I highly recommend exploring the citadel with a guide to gain a better understanding of the history of both the city and Corsica! On the mainland, people know far too little about Corsica’s fascinating history, even though it has shaped all local traditions and culture right up to the present day…

To reach the citadel, head toward the main gate that cuts through the dizzying 16th-century ramparts. A certain tranquility now emanates from its steep, narrow streets, painted in shades of yellow and ochre. The citadel is, in fact, sunny all year round, no matter the weather!

Visiter Calvi : guide pratique

Before exploring the maze of narrow streets, I recommend taking a full walk along the ramparts to take in the 360-degree views! The citadel is like a balcony overlooking the Mediterranean, offering sweeping views of the town of Calvi, the snow-capped Corsican mountains, and the entire Revellata headland.

A wonderful introduction to all the hidden gems you’ll discover if you come to visit Calvi and its surroundings!

Afterward, it’s lovely to stroll through its streets and be surprised by the ocean view that sometimes comes into view at the end of an alley. Don’t miss the Place d’Armes, where you can admire the beautiful cathedral!

Practical info :Practical info: 2-hour guided tour with a tour guide: €16 for adults – every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. (departing from the tourist office) from mid-June to mid-September, and occasionally during the off-season; book here. Audio-guided tour available: €8.

2. VISIT CALVI, CORSICA : HISTORIC DOWNTOWN

As you make your way down from the citadel, you can admire the elegant Salt Tower, dating from the late 15th century, and get a sense of just how high the ramparts are from the outside…

Right next door, the lower town is now the lively heart of Calvi, with its shops and Quai Landry, which is home to a large number of restaurants offering a magical view of the turquoise sea and the mountains in the background…

In the maze of Calvi’s narrow streets, the old fishing district has given way to numerous shops and the city’s true nerve center: the square in front of the Church of Sainte Marie Majeure. Religion holds a special place in Corsica and still brings together a very large portion of the population.

Numerous processions led by local brotherhoods regularly celebrate patron saint and religious festivals. A tradition as spectacular as it is authentic – not to be missed if you’re visiting Calvi at that time!

Be sure to check the calendar of major festivals and processions: it’s an experience you must have to fully grasp the meaning and fervor of Corsican traditions. If you’re visiting Calvi in April, for example, there’s the Granitula on Good Friday evening!

3. VISIT CALVI, CORSICA : BY THE SEA

Now let’s head to the coast: you simply can’t visit Calvi without walking along its immense white-sand beach, which stretches as far as the eye can see… In addition to its crystal-clear waters and shades of blue, Calvi’s beach offers one of the most beautiful views in the region!

From the port, continue along the coast until you reach the beach, which stretches for no less than 5 kilometers… The view of the mountains in the foreground, as well as the snow-capped peaks in the background, is absolutely stunning. And as a bonus, there’s the tranquility – an invaluable gift of visiting off-season…

There are few places in France where you can admire both the sea and snow-capped mountains from such close proximity! The panorama actually reminded me of the view from the castle hill in Nice or the beautiful city of Annecy, with its lake surrounded by mountains… But no, here it is truly the sea facing the mountains!

And as you gradually move away from Calvi’s historic center, you can also admire the view of the harbor, the old town, and the citadel overlooking them: a breathtaking view!

On the beach, you’ll find plenty of beach huts where you can enjoy delicious food overlooking the sea, but don’t hesitate to take a few steps off the beaten path by crossing the railroad tracks: a trail shaded by pine trees offers a completely different perspective. The boardwalk is a 3.5 km round trip.

4. VISIT CALVI BY MEETING ITS ARTISANS

Visiting Calvi also means meeting its artisans! Many creators have made their home here, whether in the heart of the citadel or in the villages of the Calvi region. Don’t hesitate to step inside their workshop just past the entrance to the citadel, on the right!

You’ll have the chance to discover works in bronze clay, glass, and driftwood by three passionate artists who, in addition to displaying their creations in their charming shop, offer introductory workshops on their techniques!

Visiter Calvi : guide pratique

I had the chance to explore bronze clay work with Marie-Restitude, who offers the opportunity to hammer a bronze medallion and assemble it into your own necklace! It’s also a chance to discover a little-known material and the entire manufacturing process involved, which is as complex as it is fascinating!

As part of the Rencontres balanines, you can also meet many other artisans along the Balagne Artisans’ Craft Trail (see the “Discover the Villages Around Calvi” section).

Practical info: Workshop from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. – reservations required through the tourist office / schedule available on the tourist office website – €30 per workshop – discounted rates based on group size (max 4 people). Open year-round except in November, late December, January, and February.

5. ENJOY THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BEACHES AROUND CALVI

While Calvi Beach itself is already stunning, I recommend taking the train from Calvi U Trinichellu to explore the many idyllic coves and beaches between Calvi and L’Île Rousse.

The views from the train on the way there are also breathtaking: on one side, the rugged coastline and the Mediterranean stretching as far as the eye can see; on the other, the maquis and the snow-capped peaks of the Corsican mountains. It’s hard to imagine a more beautiful setting!

There are also many hiking trails accessible from the stations along the route. I loved the one at Punta Caldanu, which starts at the Lumio L’Arinella station. The hike is very easy, with no elevation gain, and offers a chance to explore the stunning, rugged coastline with its strikingly shaped granite rocks!

If you take away the color, they’re quite reminiscent of the rocks along Brittany’s Pink Granite Coast!

This picturesque little train therefore gives you access to plenty of things to do in Calvi without a car!

Train travel guide : 40-minute ride between Calvi and L’Île Rousse, with numerous stops – during the off-season, the conductor will ask where you’re getting off, as stops are only made upon request – tickets cost between €2 and €6 depending on the distance and must be purchased at the station – schedules available here

6. BEST HIKES AROUND CALVI

Even starting from Calvi, you can go hiking and make the most of it to explore Corsica’s natural beauty, which holds so many wonders.

There are several options available to you. I particularly recommend hiking up to Notre-Dame de la Serra to admire the panoramic view of Calvi’s citadel and the sea. The chapel is also very charming, all dressed in blue. You can get there on foot from Calvi, or by car.

The most beautiful seaside hike just a stone’s throw from Calvi is the one to Pointe de la Revellata. This peninsula, crowned by a lighthouse, is actually the westernmost point of Calvi.

It’s therefore the perfect spot to watch the sunset over the sea on the horizon… You can also explore some lovely turquoise coves and Corsican flora, all just a stone’s throw from Calvi! Corsican immortelle, rosemary, and lavender perfume the hills in spring and paint them with color in March and April!

While I was lucky enough to discover these two must-see destinations, there are many other hikes to enjoy around Calvi. I encourage you to contact Fabien at the Balagne Mountain Office; he’s passionate about the region and knows it like the back of his hand.

The association offers half-day and full-day guided hikes, as well as outdoor activities (canyoning, etc.) starting in May, and also during the off-season (upon request). It’s the perfect way to explore the region’s natural gems while benefiting from a guide’s expertise on Corsica’s wildlife, flora, and traditions…

Practical Information:

Walk to Notre-Dame de la Serra: 1 hour 15 minutes round trip from downtown Calvi (200m elevation gain) – 5 km

Revallata Hike: 9 km – allow 2 hours 45 minutes to walk around the headland, though several shorter trails are available. Don’t forget to add a 45-minute walk from downtown Calvi if you don’t have a car. Be careful: in summer, there is no shade on the peninsula!

Visit the Balagne Mountain Office website to find the schedules for guided hikes.

7. TAKE A WELLNESS BREAK AT CORSICA BEAUTY

This is undoubtedly one of the prettiest shops in Calvi, and for good reason! Nestled in the heart of the historic center, Corsica Beauty carefully selects the island’s natural treasures, including the must-have immortelle, with its many benefits.

Only Corsican artisans and products made from Corsican plants that meet a very strict quality charter are selected! Teas, soaps, perfumes, cosmetics, skincare products… You’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to bringing back lovely gifts Made in Corsica!

Activités à faire à Calvi

Corsica Beauty also offers a wide range of services: personalized skin analysis (free!) by experts, holistic massages, cosmetic-making workshops…

I had the chance to try a massage and a therapeutic perfume-making workshop, and I highly recommend them if you’d like to take a little time for yourself during your visit to Calvi!

Practical info : olistic massages starting at €110 for a 1-hour massage
Check the shop’s Instagram account for the workshop schedule for adults and children, starting at €10 per person – be sure to book well in advance, especially in the summer!

8. DISCOVER THE VILLAGES TO VISIT AROUND CALVI

It would be a real shame to visit Calvi without exploring its hinterland, which is brimming with charming villages and promises wonderful encounters… An authentic, unspoiled region that’s a must-see! In fact, starting from Calvi, you can follow the Wine Route, as well as the Route of the Senses and the Route of Balagne’s Traditional Crafts.

Just a few minutes from Calvi, a landscape of rolling hills dotted with villages and surrounded by the mountains of Haute-Corse unfolds. Olive groves -the true “green gold” of Balagne- and livestock farming reign supreme here, with the added bonus of a panoramic view of the sea that greets visitors at almost every turn!

  • Calenzana

It’s a pleasure to wander through Corsica’s lively villages! Every village is worth a stop: to discover local traditions, but also to meet the local artisans and producers (winemakers, farmers, cookie makers, and more) who are everywhere along these roads!

As you leave Calvi heading toward the airport, then take the D51 toward Moncale, you’ll already be treated to stunning panoramic views! Then you can explore Calenzana, Montemaggiore, and the must-see Sant’Antonino…

Our first stop, Calenzana, is a village balanin in all its splendor: bustling, surrounded by greenery, nestled among the mountains and opening out to the sea, it is home to no fewer than seven Catholic churches.

Calenzana - Village a visiter autour de Calvi

It is also the northern starting point of the GR20, the famous hiking trail that winds through the Corsican mountains from north to south across the Isle of Beauty. Don’t miss its charming Baroque church and the chapel directly across from it, which serves as the headquarters of the village’s brotherhood and offers a glimpse into this Corsican tradition.

The brotherhood plays a vital role in supporting the most disadvantaged in the community, organizes activities during the widely celebrated religious festivals, and serves an important community function. Every Corsican village has one!

And as you leave, don’t forget to pop into the E Fritelle cookie shop, where delicious aromas waft out and where you can even watch the baking process!

Calenzana - Village a visiter autour de Calvi

  • Montemaggiore

A little further on, the secluded village of Montemaggiore is a hidden medieval gem that’s still off the beaten path but definitely worth a visit! Its views of the surrounding hills and the sea are breathtaking!

Feel free to wander through its narrow streets all the way to Saint Joseph’s Chapel: a little hidden gem that’s perfect for finding peace and quiet, and ideal for taking in all the beauty of the surrounding nature.

  • Sant’Antonino

Next, head to Sant’Antonino via the Col de Salvi. The roads here are narrow but not very busy, and the view of the many small villages nestled in the Balanine hills is just as beautiful as the villages themselves!

Sant’Antonino is undoubtedly the must-see village in the Calvi area. It’s also very crowded: don’t hesitate to visit at the end of the day if you’re exploring Calvi and its region in the summer – once the tour buses have left, the village comes back to life, and you can enjoy the sunset and the many restaurants for dinner!

Sant'Antonino - Village a visiter autour de Calvi

Ranked among the most beautiful villages in France, it sits perched at an elevation of 550 meters and dates back to the 9th century! Its spectacular vaulted passageways and cobblestone streets are what give it its charm!

And since villages in the Balanins region are synonymous with craftsmanship and local producers, you can also discover two artisans -a ceramist and a stonecutter- as well as sample fresh citrus juices straight from the producer at Clos Antonini, at the entrance to the village…

And just a stone’s throw from Sant Antonino, the village of Pigna is also known for its many artisans. Music boxes, instrument making, etching, ceramics… There are wonderful local experiences to be had in this charming village, with its ochre-colored facades and blue shutters!

Note: Two great places to eat in the heart of the Balagne villages: Chez Léon in Cateri, and the farm-inn Chez Edgar in Lavatoggio – a Corsican institution if you’re a meat lover (be sure to book well in advance during the summer).

  • How to visit Calvi and its hilltop villages without a car?

There are two ways to explore the villages of Balagne: either discover these roads on your own, or let Olivier and his team at Bianconi Scuperta guide you. The company offers full-day heritage tours along the roads of Balagne, in small groups, led by a passionate and engaging local guide.

Village a visiter autour de Calvi

I find this the ideal way to uncover all the secrets of these regions, as well as the traditions and history of Corsica. The villages are, in fact, inextricably linked to local traditions, and it would be a real shame to miss out on all of that by simply strolling through the narrow streets!

This is therefore one of the best things to do in Calvi without a car, as it’s a far cry from the standard, soulless organized tours.

Practical info : check the excursion schedule on Bianconi Scuperta’s Facebook page – €70 per person for a full-day, all-inclusive tour (excluding lunch at a local village restaurant)

Corsica is, of course, rich in delicious, high-quality local artisanal products, and there truly is something for everyone!

When it comes to drinks, you’ll find Corsican beers (such as Gloria de Calvi or the immortelle beer), the famous Semper Fi rosé… Many distilleries also produce myrtle liqueur.

For food lovers, stuffed pasta, olive oil, Corsican charcuterie, and a wide variety of sheep’s and goat’s milk cheeses are also highlights in Corsica. You can find them at Ortu di Baba in Calvi!

If you have a sweet tooth, don’t hesitate to try the delicious clementine and brocciu ice creams, the canistrelli, or the cujuelle -typical of Calenzana – which you can find at E Fritelle; you can even see how they’re made at the shop-workshop in Calenzana.
